Lazyjacks
Lines rigged on each side of a boom to guide and contain a sail as it is lowered.
They normally lead from the mast or upper rigging to points along the boom, forming a cradle for a mainsail or similar fore-and-aft sail. They may be fixed, adjustable or integrated with a sail cover and are particularly useful with full battens, but they do not furl or secure the sail by themselves.
Poorly adjusted lazyjacks can snag battens or chafe the sail during hoisting. Their tension and position should suit the operation, and the lowered sail still requires proper ties, cover or other securing before relying on it in wind or at sea.
