Forehatch
A hatch in the forward part of a vessel’s deck or superstructure.
It may provide access, light or ventilation to a forecabin, forepeak, store or other forward compartment. Its exact position, purpose, opening direction and escape function depend on the vessel.
A forehatch is highly exposed to water on deck and is not automatically watertight merely because it has seals and latches. Coaming, gasket, hinges, dogs or catches, glazing and drainage require inspection, and the hatch must be secured as conditions and the vessel’s procedures require.
