Douse

Lowering a sail or putting out a light quickly.

This can refer to bringing a sail down to reduce power, prepare for harbour entry, or respond to a change in wind. It can also describe extinguishing a light on board. When lowering a sail, the crew should control the halyard, gather the sail and keep lines clear of snags. Speed and order matter if conditions are building or if the vessel is approaching confined water.
