Bilges
The lowest internal spaces of a vessel’s hull, where water and other liquids naturally collect.
Bilge spaces lie below the normal working or accommodation areas and may be divided into separate compartments. Small amounts of water can enter through spray, rain, shaft seals, pipework or condensation, while fuel or oil may also find its way into the bilge if a system leaks.
Bilge pumps are used to remove accumulated water, and many vessels have alarms that warn when the level rises unexpectedly. Bilges should be kept accessible and reasonably clean so that leaks can be spotted and pumps, strainers and alarms can work correctly. Unexpected or repeated accumulation should be investigated rather than treated simply by pumping it away.
