Spar

Any long, sturdy pole or beam used on a ship to support sails, rigging, or other equipment. Spars are typically made of wood, metal, or composite materials and are essential to a ship’s rigging system. There are several types of spars on a vessel, each serving different functions in relation to the sails and mast.

Common types of spars include:

  • Mast: The vertical spar that supports the sails and rigging.
  • Boom: A horizontal spar attached to the foot (bottom) of a sail, used to extend and control it.
  • Yard: A horizontal spar from which square sails are suspended.
  • Gaff: A spar that extends the top edge of a sail, often used with gaff-rigged sails.
  • Bowsprit: A spar extending forward from the ship’s bow, used to anchor the forestays.

Spars are crucial to the structure and performance of sailing vessels, helping to spread the sails and manage the rigging for optimal wind capture and maneuverability
