Leeway

A vessel’s sideways drift or deviation from its intended course due to the influence of wind. It is the difference between the direction the vessel is pointing (heading) and the direction it moves over the ground. Leeway is an important consideration for navigational planning and course corrections to ensure the vessel stays on an intended track.
