Golf

Phonetic alphabet letter G. In marine terminology, “Golf” refers to the letter “G” in the International Code of Signals.

Pilotage: When a vessel displays the Golf flag, it signals to port authorities or pilot stations that it requires the services of a pilot. This is particularly important in challenging navigation areas such as harbours, river mouths, or channels.

Fishing Operations: In the fishing context, displaying the Golf flag alerts other vessels that the fishing vessel is actively hauling nets, prompting them to steer clear and avoid interfering with the fishing operations.

Code Flag Golf (G)

Nautical or signal flags are used at sea to convey messages over long distances. Only black, blue, red, white and yellow are used because these are the only colours readily distinguished at sea. Many different coding schemes have been used, but the International Code is the most common.
